Probably just good old-fashioned jamming. Possibly something a little more sophisticated, but basically, interfering with the control link.

caution on taking anything the russians state as face value, too.

If the Russians were using their simplest countermeasures then jamming PNT (GPS, Glosnass, Beidou, Galileo) or jamming the control link.

I suppose the Russians also could have used other electromagnetic countermeasures (high powered microwaves, laser etc) for more resilient UAVs.
