Randy McDonald asks if Panamanian creditors have any recourse against Venezuela; we answer “yes, but not very much.”
But it looks as if there is something that the Panamanian government can do: publicize secret Venezuelan bank accounts in Panama!
Let’s turn the mike over to President Martinelli’s chief-of-staff, Roberto Henríquez. “How can Maduro talk about corruption, when they have used the [Panamanian] banking center to hide fortunes? They’ve looted their country. Maduro has placed Venezuela at the service of a little group, that supports him, that controls the country through the force of arms, and much of that money is in the banking center.”
Mwa hah! It will be much fun to see what they report if the Panamanians follow through. Man, I hope they do.
For what it’s worth, it also seems that the Colón Free Zone companies have called President Maduro’s bluff: they are willing to open their books to the Venezuelan government. To quote Luis Germán Gómez, head of the CFZ merchants’ association: “We are open to investigating what has to be investigated, reviewing what needs to be reviewed, but we are also open to being paid.”
