 English spelling is very difficult. So, as my friend Helena Lellis has discovered, the language metamorphosizes in ... uh ... interesting ways when it hits Portuguese.

 

Now, Spanish and French spelling are not that difficult, so misspelling every single item on the menu was quite the accomplishment.

 

Of course, it isn’t clear that Portuguese spelling is all that easy either:

It's a great opportunity for Americans to learn Portuguese sound-symbol relationships. English made "heure" into hour and "fleure" into flower, so why shouldn't Brazilians make "five" into "faive"? Makes perfect sense. (Actually, "bolinho de carne" was spelled right. They haven't been introduced to "mitbols" yet...} Valeu!
