New information emerged fast regarding that drone attack in Syria. From the Washington Post:
- Nobody seems to know who was responsible. Yesterday we noted that the Islamic State controlled no more territory; experts suspect a different rebel group was responsible;
- The Russians claim the attack involved 13 drones, 7 shot down and 6 disrupted by electronic countermeasures;
- The drones appear to have traveled at least 50 kilometers.
In terms of the Syrian Civil War, this is a nothingburger. It does not represent a rebel resurgence. Nor is does it mean anything for the Russian presence, which was already being drawn down in the wake of Putin’s declaration of victory.
But in terms of the future of war, it’s a harbinger. I want to know more about those electronic countermeasures.
