I wonder if anyone credible has done the work on the supposed cycle of brutal->(almost) ritualized -> brutal warfare cycle.

um. Please don't take this the wrong way, Noel.

However...

Didn't you ask a similar question about whether or not recessions since WW2 had been decreasing in their effects prior to the Great and Late Splat?

I might have. I'd be delighted if I did! After all, there was a Great Moderation, but I didn't understand why, so I couldn't shake the feeling it wouldn't last.

Ditto the Great Pacification, but my readers are being most unhelpful about proposing a theory to explain the pattern.

I think Will's tongue-in-cheek point was that the Great Pacification might go the way of the Great Moderation, now that you've asked the question.

In my experience, the usually cited causes of the relative restraint of modern warfare are nuclear weapons and televison. The former are supposed to discourage direct confrontations between developed nations, the latter is assumed to weaken public support for more brutal measures by making it easier to show their consequences. I doubt both claims, but I'm finding it difficult to articulate why or come up with a better hypothesis.
