The point is that some Arizona lawmakers are proposing to establish a state guard for a single, very specific purpose, namely patrolling the border.

Which is, as you aver, a pointless idea, and one that will exacerbate tensions in the state between Mexican-Americans and non-Mexican-Americans. I agree about the politics in Arizona.

I just want to point out that a state defense force is not unconstitutional or unprecedented.

I should add that patrolling the border isn't the purpose of the state defense force mentioned in the bill, even though everyone knows that's the subtext.
